Boro is a Japanese word meaning “rags.” They would lovingly patch and repair cotton bedding and clothing in order to use every last inch of the the hard-to-come-by cotton at the time. They were completely utilitarian for the once impoverished Japanese rural population from the mid 1800's to mid 1900's, but even though utilitarian, they took pride in everything they made and the boro is great example of that and the beauty in Japanese folk craft.
